History of Chester 07930
The colorful roots of Historic Chester, NJ were planted some two hundred years ago, when its earliest settlers followed the Indian trails which weave through the dense forests of recent Jersey. Two of these trails entered in an area called “Alamatunk” through the Minisink Indians, which meant “black earth bottom” for Black Water. As the pioneers nestled into the moving hills of Morris County, these people dubbed their new territory “Black River. ”
Eventually, “Black River” was replaced by “Chester, ” as Chester, England was the our ancestors home of many of Black River’s residents. On January 29, 1779, the residents were granted their own request to create their own township, and also the Township of Chester was born.
Throughout the late 1700s, Chester began to come out as a hub of business action, thanks to the two major roads which brought in daily droves of exhausted, hungry travelers. By 1806, the actual Washington Turnpike (Route 24) had been chartered, sparking rapid development within Chester’s center. Taverns, inns, blacksmith shops and other businesses soon trimmed up throughout the town. The apple company orchards that graced the Chester landscape-many of which are still active today-gave rise to several distilleries that dedicated to applejack and apple brandy.
Chester’s Industrial Revolution
While agriculture as well as small business were the backbone associated with Chester, it didn’t take long for inhabitants to realize the town’s industrial possible. The fast-moving streams that ran through the region made Chester a chief setting for water-powered grist as well as saw mills. These streams additionally served as power sources for your early charcoal-burning forges and furnaces, which were used to process the metal ore taken from local mines.
Once the Civil War inflated the demand with regard to iron, Chester’s mines flourished. Through the late 1800s, the township experienced 28 active mines, six which were located on Main Street by yourself. However , once larger and more potent iron ore deposits were found in Minnesota’s Mesabi Range, Chester’s metal industry quickly waned, and by the actual 1890s, all of its mines had been shut down.
