History of Andover 07821
ANDOVER BOROUGH, NJ – The small city of Andover Borough, located on Path 206, was incorporated in 1904 after splitting off from Andover Township.
Andover Borough is a truly historic town, with many buildings dating back towards the 1800s. Christine Cassidy, President from the Andover Borough Historical Society, grew to become interested in the history of the Borough whenever she moved there several years ago.
“I’ve always been interested in history, and when We moved into my home, I wanted to understand the history of it, ” Cassidy stated.
While learning the historical importance of her own home, Cassidy recognized the history of many of the homes about her.
“Many of the homes upon Railroad Ave [behind the actual municipal building and museum] look exactly as they did in the beginning from the 1900s, ” Cassidy said.
The girl soon joined the Historical Community and discovered the old Andover Area Museum.
The Andover Borough Art gallery originally opened when the Historical Community began in 1989. However , it was closed for repairs until year 2011. Now the Museum is open up on the third Sunday of each 30 days from 1pm to 4pm. Organizations or individuals can arrange for trips by appointment as well.
While it can be a small town of 600 consumers, in the 1900’s the town was hectic with new businesses and technology.
Within 1904 when the town was integrated, Andover Borough officials brought electrical power to the town, a huge step forward within a community during that time period. These frontrunners encouraged business through the iron souterrain, the railroad and farming methods.
According to research done by Cassidy, most of the houses built between 1865 as well as 1922, are still standing, such as the homes on Railroad Avenue, which utilized to line the railroad tracks associated with 1904.
Many of the buildings on Path 206 are also still standing through the early days of the town, but regrettably some of the buildings have been burned straight down over the years.
One of the memorable fires occurred in 1908 and started in the actual Municipal Building on Main Road.
“Luckily, the whole town was able to escape due to the three story red packet structure halfway down Main Road, which acted as a fire hurdle, ” Cassidy said in a statement written for the Andover Borough Art gallery.
As the town was rebuilding the previous three-story brick building, they integrated the original plaque reading “Smith’s Century Hall, 1876” in the new stucco building.
The Andover Inn upon Main Street was standing till 2006 when it burned down. A brand new building has been built in the same region, which looks similar to the historical Andover Inn, but with many updated functions.
The United Methodist Church, as soon as located on Main Street (Route 206), was burned down in 1991, as well as was not rebuilt. The fire was arson and the church was one of 3 historical buildings burned down inside a month.
One Andover Borough business proprietor only imagines what the town might have been like if the beautiful church had been still standing. The Andover Area Historical Society was scheduled to get the building only a few days after the fireplace occurred.
Other historical buildings are the Grist Mill with the Wishing Well at front, the Andover Presbyterian Cathedral with the old one-room Andover College House, and the Iron Master’s Home. These buildings demonstrate the wealthy history of Andover Borough and provide the town its beauty and elegance that residents love.
